California High School Diploma
The California High School Diploma is a rigorous, college-preparatory diploma earned by students who complete all of the academic and graduation requirements set by the State of California Department of Education. To receive this diploma, students must meet the following requirements:
- 2 years of mathematics (including Algebra I)
- 3 years of English.
- 3 years of social science (including world history, culture, and geography; U.S. history and geography; one semester of American government; and one semester of economics)
High School of America’s California high school diploma program allows students to earn a fully accredited diploma, regardless of their current school situation. Our courses are taught by certified teachers who use a multi-sensory curriculum to help students achieve academic mastery and lifelong learning skills.

In addition, California homeschoolers can earn their CHSD by completing two years of Algebra I and Geometry; three years of history/social science (including history, geography, economics, and American government); two years of science (one year must be biological sciences, the other can be any one of the natural or physical sciences); three years in one foreign language; and four years in visual/performing arts.

High School Equivalency Diploma: GED, HiSET, and TASC
The High School Equivalency (HSE) is an alternative diploma option offered in California; it allows students to demonstrate readiness for entry into postsecondary education or training. The HSE can also be used to enter the workforce.
There are three types of High School Equivalency tests: GED, HiSET, and TASC. All three exams cover the same subject areas (math, language arts literacy). However, each test has its own specific set of topics, so students must be sure to choose the test that covers their learning needs. All three tests aim to help students learn the skills they need to be productive citizens.
The GED test is taken on a computer at certified test centers. The HiSET and TASC exams, formerly known as the General Educational Development (GED) Test and the High School Equivalency Test (HSE), are now offered exclusively through paper-based testing. HSOA’s online classes can help you prepare for any of these exams.
