Common Challenges for High School Students and Their Parents
Parents can play a vital role in helping teens succeed in school by being informed and giving support and guidance to their high school kids. Although teens are seeking independence, parental involvement is a crucial ingredient for academic success. One of the ways parents can play their role in helping their children overcome academic challenges in high school.
Transition Issues
- The flexibility to adapt to change is one of the challenges kids face in high school. There is the stress of making a proper adjustment since high school students believe that their future depends upon their doing well. A parent helping to put choices into a longer-term perspective is useful. Even so, several professionals on campus can assist them in making decisions, including teachers, academic counselors, and college staff.
Academics
- For some students, high school work is hard, and some students may experience their first low grades. Most students may have done well in middle school, lonely to be disappointed by high school results. Notably, some high school courses are not as demanding as college. A student has to understand a particular professor’s expectations and style of grading. Parents need to play a part in noticing academic problems and solutions for their children.
- High school students are expected to maintain their schedules and develop good study habits. However, this is one of the challenges facing teachers today. Students are not self-driven. Students fail to notice that time management is a skill that can be beneficial even in their future endeavors. It is vital to help such students to solve this challenge by having a schedule of doing things.
College Life
College life presents a maze of things to figure out for students– such as which courses to take, who to get to know, where to go for this or that. Students use a lot of energy trying to make sense of the new environment and problems with high school activities and processes. Therefore, students may feel confused and bewildered from time to time.
- College students experience vocabulary and rituals that are new and unique. To most students, concepts such as deans, provost, convocations may be new. Some campus rituals may feel weird and become a challenge to cope with for most students.
Home and Family
- Family structure changes when one joins the high school. Parents start experiencing freedom when the kids leave home, or they may feel a great sense of loss. Some parents may feel both! This is a challenge that a son or daughter will also feel. It is essential to have consistent communication between the parents with the high scholar to bridge the gap.
At the High School of America, our teachers, counselors, and staff strive to help students cope with everyday problems for students.
